Gathering, Greeting, and Announcements

Prayer of the Day

Almighty God, gracious Lord, we thank you that your Holy Spirit renews the church in every age. Pour out your Holy Spirit on your faithful people. Keep them steadfast in your word, protect and comfort them in times of trial, defend them against all enemies of the gospel, and bestow on the church your saving peace, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Gospel: A Reading from the Gospel of St. Matthew

Jesus Walks on Water

Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard
(Matt. 20:1–16)

But he replied to one of them, Friend, I am doing you no wrong; did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage? Take what belongs to you and go.

Matthew 20:13–14a

Matthew 18:12–14

12What do you think? If a shepherd has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go in search of the one that went astray? 13And if he finds it, truly I tell you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine that never went astray. 14So it is not the will of your Father in heaven that one of these little ones should be lost.

P: The Gospel of the Lord.
C: Praise to you, O Christ.

Hymn

A Mighty Fortress Is Our God

ELW #504

Our own Lisa Alvis plays the hymn A Mighty Fortress Is Our God on the organ. You can find more performances like this if you check out Lisa's YouTube channel.

1A mighty fortress is our God,
a sword and shield victorious;
he breaks the cruel oppressor's rod
and wins salvation glorious.
The old satanic foe
has sworn to work us woe!
With craft and dreadful might
he arms himself to fight.
On earth he has no equal.
2No strength of ours can match his might!
We would be lost, rejected.
But now a champion comes to fight,
whom God himself elected.
You ask who this may be?
The Lord of hosts is he!
Christ Jesus, mighty Lord,
God's only Son, adored.
He holds the field victorious.
3Though hordes of devils fill the land
All threat'ning to devour us,
We tremble not, unmoved we stand;
They cannot overpower us.
Let this world's tyrant rage;
In battle we'll engage!
His might is doomed to fail;
God's judgment must prevail!
One little word subdues him.
4God's Word forever shall abide,
no thanks to foes, who fear it;
for God himself fights by our side
with weapons of the Spirit.
Were they to take our house,
goods, honor, child, or spouse,
though life be wrenched away,
they cannot win the day.
The kingdom's ours forever!

Apostles' Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayers of the Church

P: Lord, in your mercy,
C: hear our prayer.

Lord's Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those
who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
forever and ever. Amen.

We remember in our prayers

Becoming a Good Steward

Recycling the emotion of Resentment: Resentment is a signal of being stuck in a state of unresolved conflict. Resentment is simply refelt anger. Balance your view by ceasing to focus on the other person’s part in the drama and look at your own role. Are you proud of your behavior? Why are you angry? What do you feel you have lost? And what can you do about it? Ask God for forgiveness in your role in the situation and for help in developing constructive solutions to the problem. (Creation Justice Ministries)

Upcoming General Election

The fellowship hall will be in use as a polling place all day Tuesday, November 3. If you need to drop something off at the church Tuesday, please use the office entry. No meetings should be scheduled at the church that day or evening.

Charitable Trust Donations

Did you know that memorials do not automatically go to the Charitable Trust? Only by designating the "Charitable Trust" as the recipient is the donation added to the fund for future OSLC needs.

Food Drive

The Mission committee is continuing to collect food that will be shared between Safe Harbor and the Midwest Food Bank. We are collecting the following items:

There is a box just inside the church entrance where you can deposit items. Please do not take items to Megan or Pastor Henrick's office.

And School Supplies Too

In addition to collecting food for local food banks, the Mission Committee is collecting school supplies for Fairview School. They indicated the following as the most needed:

We are also collecting

Anyone wishing to donate can put in the church narthex in the same baskets as donated food. Any questions call Kay DeFrees or Pam Schwartzkopf.
